Job Description
Solidus is searching for a Mechanical Engineer to work in a research intensive environment.

Successful candidate will provide design, analysis, test and integration support for the development of satellite instrumentation for NASA and ESA research projects.

Mechanical design of major subsystems including; high voltage power supplies; packaging for analog and digital electronics; electro-static and ion optic structures. Activities result in flight deliverable instrument assemblies. The position operates under the general supervision and direction of the space science center senior mechanical engineer.

Responsibilities:
- Mechanical design with SolidWorks CAD software for 3-D model development and manufacturing detail drawing production
- Support of in-house piece part machining and vendor outsourcing for flight deliverables as well as prototype and test hardware.
- Standard machining methods and surface treatments
- Edging and EDM methods 
- Hi-vacuum system design, operation and maintenance for instrument testing 
- Travel to partner institutes and or outside laboratories for instrument operational and environmental testing including vibration and calibration testing.
- Travel (both foreign and domestic) for satellite integration and delivery
- Prepare instrument assembly and test procedures, document fabrication methods for flight hardware, and develop operational procedures for in-house test systems
- Prepare engineering section of proposals and provide cost estimates for new work as requested
- Assemble integrate electro-mechanical subsystems as well as overall instrument assembly in support of testing and delivery
- Work as a team member with scientists, electrical engineers, contamination control experts, and QA engineers and technicians
- Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements:
- US Citizenship and the ability to obtain a DoD Secret Clearance
- Bachelors degree in mechanical engineering in 2 to 5 years of related experience
- Proficiency with solid Works CAD software 2 to 3 years experience
- Experience with lab-based research and strong mechanical hands-on aptitude
- Familiarity with standard machine shop practices and methods
- Strong detail drawing experience. ASME14.5 and GD&T experience

Additional desirable qualifications:
- Advanced degree in engineering
- Experience with clean room procedures
FEA analysis experience for loads and model analysis via NASTRAN or similar software is desirable
- Experience with all standard machining methods and surface treatments
- Familiarity with edging and EDM methods highly desirable
- Experience with hi-vacuum system design, operation and maintenance for instrument testing highly desirable.
