JOB DESCRIPTION

Universal Rail Systems is seeking an Indigenous Relations Business Partner to work in a team environment to assist in building and fostering relationships with Indigenous communities and stakeholders. The role will support the development of strategies from an Indigenous perspective and to implement organizational change on the path towards Reconciliation. The individual in this position is expected to lead the organization in the research, development, design, and implementation of best practices in Indigenous Relations, and Reconciliation. The role will also provide support and expertise throughout the organization on various internal and external projects and initiatives.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the Chair of Universal Rail Systems Indigenous Engagement Team, the incumbent will:

  • Actively support the delivery of initiatives through Universal Rail’s Indigenous Reconciliation and Action Plan (IRAP) Committee focused on recruitment, procurement, community engagement, and communications.
  • Assist with the development of and being an active member of an Indigenous Advisory Council.
  • Establish and maintain working relationships between local Indigenous community members and stakeholders in areas of procurement, sub-contract work, marketing, employment, training & development, mentorship for new indigenous businesses and communities of interest.
  • Support the design, planning and implementation of initiatives to enable engagement with the Indigenous community.
  • Facilitating and participating in meetings to learn about the needs and concerns from the community.
  • Consult with leadership to provide cultural/protocol insights and information about community needs and priorities.
  • Provide advice on Indigenous equity issues including cultural safety, cultural awareness, and best practices.
  • Promote awareness of Universal’s programs and services to Indigenous communities.
  • Coordinate opportunities for corporate knowledge transfer to new Indigenous business through mentorship, training, education, and other programs.
  • Improve procurement access for Indigenous business.
  • Assist with policy development.
  • Provide information in relation to strategies, initiatives, and statistics for clients.
  • Prepare and deliver reports and presentations to executive audiences as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Understanding and commitment to the values of Reconciliation
  • Demonstrated track record and experience collaborating with Indigenous communities and businesses.
  • Demonstrated understanding and sensitivity to Indigenous culture and traditions.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to establish collaborative relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders.
  • Proficient computer experience which includes Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Excellent organizational skills, follow-through and workload planning skills; ability to juggle multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • A high level of initiative and drive to achieve goals.
  • Ability to understand, connect and collaborate with Indigenous communities.
  • Ability to write strategies, engagement plans, and to develop and present recommendations and reports.
  • Well-developed problem solving and conflict resolution skills; ability to develop and present innovative ideas, approaches, and solutions.
  • Organizational and project management skills with the ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and work in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Ability to present information and facilitate discussions.

REQUIREMENTS
  • University degree/ Diploma in Indigenous Studies, Business, or other related education will be considered.
  • Experience collaborating with Indigenous communities and business is needed.
  • Must have a valid Full Driver's license and meet Company Authorized Driver Requirements.
  • Work schedule is Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 4:30pm with ability to work overtime as needed.
  • Primary work location is negotiable but ability to travel across Canada for work is needed.
